Steel

Since the break-up

since the sun went out

of you and me,

I’ve been skipping school.

People are too preoccupied to care,

the protection order is

pinned to the wall,

Mother is drinking more.

Thuds on the door, the postman

ringing the doorbell abruptly,

it has scrambled her mind.

Only I have nerves of steel.
